Before the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century, the area was populated by the Chiribaya civilization. The Conquistadores were given land grants by Charles V and brought olives to this area. Olive agriculture was the main crop and source of work until the early 20th century. A small settlement, Pacocha, was established by the seashore where the Osmore River (Rio Osmore) flows into the Pacific ocean. High tides in the late 19th century flooded Pacocha and the population moved to Ilo's actual location, adopting its current name. Until the beginning of the 20th century most of the people lived along the banks of the Rio Osmore, whose waters flow sporadically during the summer months. Ilo was a port of call to the ships travelling from the east to the west coast of the United States via Tierra del Fuego. After the building of a pier in the 19th century, international trade flourished in the region. Italians, Chinese, Japanese and Germans settled in Ilo during this time. However, the building of the Transcontinental Rail Road and the Panama Canal caused commercial activities to decrease and mostly steamships transporting goods between Peruvian and Chilean ports remained. The Battle of Pacocha took place near Ilo.
Šilo is a village in the north-east of the island of Krk, Croatia, population 384 (census 2011). It is one of the tourist centers of the Dobrinj municipality.
It is located in a well-sheltered lagoon called Stipanja, which is naturally enclosed by a cape called Punta Šilo. It is located across from Crikvenica, which is a tourist town on the Croatian coast. Šilo is separated from it by the Vinodolski Channel, which is only 2.5 nmi (4.6 km) wide.
Šilo is connected to the rest of the island of Krk by a regional road. It is 5 kilometers away from the center of its municipality, Dobrinj. It is also 20 kilometers far from Krk Bridge; 19.1 km from the main city of the island, Krk; 13.6 km from Vrbnik, another settlement on Krk; and 47.7 km from Rijeka, which is the most important Croatian harbor and the third largest city in the country.
Stipanja bay is well protected from eastern and southern winds by a narrow and low peninsula at the end of which cape Punta Šilo is located. At the end of this cape there is a lighthouse which emits a light beam: B BI 3s, whose maximum range is 7 nautical miles (13 km).

É lei la donna mia, é lei
che non potró lasciare mai
perché ora lo so
per l'eternitá il nostro amore durerá.
É lei la donna mia, é lei
e a tutto il mondo grideró
che tutta la mia vita, la mia felicitá
é lei, é lei, é lei . . .
To you, I give my heart completely,
To you, my love, forevermore,
All that I possess,
My life and nothin' less,
I offer humbly at your door!
To me, you bring a glimpse of heaven,
The world I really never knew,
And in return I'll give,
As long as I may live,
Devotion, only to you!
